Institutional Biosafety Committee

Reporting Line

The Institutional Biosafety Committee reports to the Vice Provost for Research or his or her designee.

Composition of Membership

The Committee shall have no less than five (5) members. Each member shall be appointed by the Vice Provost for Research (VPR) or his or her designee. One (1) member shall be a non-doctoral staff member from a Baylor biomedical laboratory who represents laboratory technical staff. At least two (2) members will be selected from the community and shall have no affiliation with Baylor University apart from their membership on the Committee. The Committee will also include the University Biosafety Officer. The VPR or his or her designee may appoint additional members at his or her discretion and the Committee shall meet the membership requirements of the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules. In addition, the VPR, his or her designee, or the IBC may appoint an ad hoc consultant(s) to the IBC to provide expertise as needed. The VPR or his or her designee also may appoint additional persons from any unit or discipline in the University to serve in an ex-officio capacity.

Committee Charge Responsibilities

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) reviews recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules research (r/s DNA) conducted at or sponsored by the University for compliance with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules (NIH Guidelines) and approves and monitors those research projects that comply with the NIH Guidelines.
